Year 1

Welcome to Year One! My name is Miss Neal and I am the class teacher. In Year One we are supported by a team of fantastic staff including Miss Holland.  We will work hard to support your child and help them to take the next steps in their learning.

What are we learning in Year 1 this term?

Spring Term 1 - Year 1

How can parents help at home?

It is really important that you read with your child as often as you can. Supporting your child as they read their reading book helps them to practice skills they have learned at school. Use the sound mats that were sent home at the beginning of the year to help the children sound out words to read them.

There are lots of free phonic games to play on the computer or iPad. Try the phonics play website below:

Reading books

Please make sure that your child has their reading book with them every day. Reading books will be changed once a week. Children who read regularly at home will be given smilies.  We will also be starting our regular reader challenge where children will get a prize if they read the agreed amount of times over the agreed term.

Planners

Your child's planner will be checked every morning by a member of staff. Please write any messages in your child's planner.  We also ask that you record if your child has read at home in their planner.

P.E

Children in Year One will have P.E. on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays please ensure that your child has a full kit including black pumps so they can fully participate in the lessons.

Playtime/Dinnertime Information

At morning play time the children are given free milk and toast.  In the afternoon the children are given free fruit.  Children can also bring a bottle of water to school if they wish.

Seasonal Information

In Summer please ensure children come to school with a sun hat and sun cream on already, extra sun cream can be brought in to re-apply.  As the weather gets colder please send your child to school with a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves.  Make sure that these are clearly labelled.

Homework

Homework in Year 1 is mainly to read regularly at home.  The children may also be given out other homework across the year such as maths and phonics.
