Year 2

llo and a very warm welcome to Year Two. My name is Miss Southworth and I am the class teacher. Mrs Ashton, Miss Aldridge and Mrs Didlick also support our children in the class.  We are all really looking forward to helping your child develop and grow throughout the year.

What we are learning this term?

How can parents help at home?

Reading every day at home is essential in Year 2 to practise and maintain phonics skills learnt in Year 1. Asking children questions before, during and after reading is also very important to develop good comprehension skills.

Please remember to keep practising your letters and sounds/spelling skills using the following websites:

You can also access the Espresso website which has lots of useful games and activities linked to maths, literacy and topic work. If you require the log in details please ask.

Reading Books

Reading books will be changed once a week, usually every Wednesday. Please try and read with your child every night and sign their planner regularly to show that reading is taking place at home. In Year 2 we check the children’s planners every day for reading comments and we award regular readers with prizes, certificates, bookmarks and reading coupons for their effort out of school!

Your child's planner will be checked every morning by a member of staff. Please record in your child's planner if they have read or if you have any messages to give to the class teacher.

P.E is on Tuesday. Please ensure your child has a full school P.E kit with pumps on this day.  There is also a Key Stage 1 Sports club on a Tuesday after school.  Please contact the school office if you wish your child to have a place on the after school club run by Wigan Athletic.

Playtime/dinnertime information

At morning playtime the children are given free milk and toast. In the afternoon the children are given free fruit. Children can also bring a water bottle to school if they wish. There is also a water fountain for the children to access throughout the school day.

Seasonal Information

As the weather gets colder, please send your child to school with a suitable warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves.

Homework in Year 2 involves daily reading at home, it is extremely important that your child reads regularly to build up their skills and fluency.  Homework also involves regular practise of times table and division facts. Children have all been given times table zappers and posters to help them learn these key facts and they will have a weekly times table test, they must try to beat their score each week!
Miss Southworth’s Letters and Sounds Group also have regular spellings (Spelling Zappers) which need to be brought back in to school every day as the children regularly self-assess each other. Other homework tasks will be sent home with your child throughout the year when appropriate. Please encourage your children to complete these tasks independently and return them to school on the date shown.
